Victorian GPs are praising the state's 2026-27 budget for its commitment to saving lives and improving access to healthcare. The budget includes free vaccination against the deadly meningococcal B strain for babies and teens, a move that has been long advocated by the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP). This is a significant step forward, as the vaccine against the B strain is not currently provided for all children and often requires an out-of-pocket payment. RACGP Victoria Chair Dr. Anita Muñoz emphasizes the potential lifesaving impact of this change, citing the unpredictability but preventability of meningitis. The campaign for this reform was largely driven by Norliah Syer-Peterson, whose son, Levi Syer, died from a meningococcal B infection. The budget also addresses the issue of inaccessible ADHD care, with reforms allowing specialist GPs to diagnose and treat ADHD patients. This is a crucial development, as current postcode-based access disparities result in patients with ADHD dying almost seven years sooner and being significantly more likely to develop substance use disorders. Dr. Muñoz highlights the readiness of Victorian GPs to support more accessible and affordable ADHD care, with an initial $750,000 commitment to accredited training for 150 GPs. These reforms are a positive step towards a more equitable and responsive healthcare system, addressing critical public health concerns and ensuring that all patients receive the necessary support and treatment.
