The Thickthorn roundabout closures are finally over, according to the project director of the £200 million roadworks scheme. Alistair Stout, from National Highways, acknowledged the challenges of rebuilding the A11/A47 junction while maintaining traffic flow, but urged road users to be patient. The scheme, approved in 2022, aims to reduce journey times by constructing slip roads and underpasses. Despite delays and disruptions, including speed limit changes and complaints from motorists, the government believes the new junction will benefit the area. More than 640,000 tonnes of earth will be moved to create two underpasses and two bridges, with machines digging up to 6.5m beneath the A11 and A47. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2028, and is one of three major road projects in Norfolk. While some residents express frustration, the government emphasizes the long-term benefits, including the potential for 44,000 new homes and 33,000 extra jobs. But here's where it gets controversial... Some question whether the short-term pain is worth the long-term gain. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments.
