Tavien St. Clair's Journey at Ohio State: Embracing the Development Process with Gratitude
As he embarks on his second season at Ohio State, Tavien St. Clair is embracing the development process with unwavering gratitude. With the return of starting quarterback Julian Sayin for another year, St. Clair's path to the starting position is paved with patience and perseverance.
The five-star prospect from Bellefontaine is thrilled to continue his growth under the mentorship of Ryan Day, Ohio State quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler, and the rest of the coaching staff. "However long it takes, I'm just grateful for the opportunity to be here," St. Clair expressed during Ohio State's media day before the Cotton Bowl.
St. Clair's arrival at Ohio State last year was met with expectations that Sayin would be the starting quarterback for 2025 and 2026, setting the stage for St. Clair to succeed him in 2027 after two years of development. This trajectory remains intact, with St. Clair now in line to be the Buckeyes' No. 2 QB in 2026 after Lincoln Kienholz's transfer to Louisville.
This places significant pressure on St. Clair, who, as a true freshman, attempted just two passes with no completions. He must now be ready to step up and play in 2026 as Ohio State's next man up at quarterback.
"Tavien is someone who really has to step up for us," Ryan Day emphasized. "He needs to be right there behind Julian and ready to go. With the challenging schedule ahead, Tavien must take the next step."
Day's belief in St. Clair's potential is evident, as he acknowledges the long road ahead in his development. St. Clair's talent, ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, is undeniable. However, the transition from Division III high school football in Ohio to the prestigious Ohio State program demands a rigorous development process.
"We see the talent. We know he can throw it. He's big and strong, and all those things. This offseason will be crucial for him," Day noted. "His efforts in the scout team, competing against the nation's best defense daily, will contribute to a successful spring and preseason."
St. Clair's confidence in his choice to commit to Ohio State is unwavering. "I committed here because I believed the quarterback development was the best in the country," he stated. "By sticking to the process and maintaining consistency, good things will happen. It's been an incredible experience, witnessing Julian's growth this year, and we eagerly anticipate his continued development."
During his freshman year, St. Clair primarily practiced with the scout team, but he has diligently worked to earn his teammates' trust and seize every opportunity. "I want to instill confidence in my teammates and coaches," he said. "I've taken steps in that direction, and I'm ready for whatever opportunities arise."
St. Clair's mentorship under Sayin has been invaluable, teaching him decision-making skills and defensive preparation. "I've learned to let the game come to me," St. Clair explained. "By manipulating defenses and maintaining a high-level performance through preparation, I can excel. Julian's preparation before games, understanding the opponent's strategy, and trusting his instincts have been remarkable."
Tavien St. Clair's journey at Ohio State is a testament to his dedication and gratitude, as he embraces the development process with open arms, ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead.
