Strongbox Theater in East Rockaway Opens After 6-Year Renovation (2026)

Strongbox Theater in East Rockaway is finally ready for its debut after a six-year renovation journey. This production, led by husband and wife owners Tony Leone and Marla D'Urso, has transformed the abandoned East Rockaway National Bank and Trust Company into a vibrant performing arts space. The theater, designed to accommodate around 90 people, will host a variety of events including plays, comedy shows, concerts, and open mic nights. It also features a bar serving cocktails, small plates, and desserts, along with an outdoor patio. The centerpiece of the space is a preserved bank vault, which adds a unique design element to the bar and provides an intriguing backdrop for stand-up comedy shows.

Leone and D'Urso's vision for Strongbox is to create a gathering place where people can disconnect from their devices and reconnect with each other. They aim to foster a community of actors aspiring to reach Broadway and local musicians looking to thrive. However, the renovation process was not without its challenges. Initially estimated to cost around seven figures, the actual expenses turned out to be double that amount. The couple had to change architects three years into the project due to dissatisfaction with the progress, which caused significant delays and added to the financial burden.

Despite these obstacles, the couple persevered, driven by their passion for the project and the belief that they owned the building. Their determination paid off, and Strongbox is now set to become a hub for local talent. The theater's opening marks a significant milestone, not just for the couple but also for the community, as it promises to bring back the once-thriving original music scene of Long Island.

In my opinion, Strongbox Theater represents a unique blend of personal passion and community need. It's a testament to the power of perseverance and the potential for local talent to flourish. What makes this particularly fascinating is the couple's ability to turn a challenging renovation into a thriving performing arts space. From my perspective, Strongbox is more than just a theater; it's a symbol of hope and opportunity for the East Rockaway community and beyond.
