In a thrilling midweek clash, the No. 3 Texas Longhorns maintained their undefeated streak in the 2026 season with a convincing 16-3 victory over the Houston Christian Huskies. This marks the third consecutive run-rule win for Coach Jim Schlossnagle's team, solidifying their dominance in the all-time series.
But here's where it gets interesting...
Freshman pitcher Sam Cozart, a right-hander, stepped up to the plate for his second career start. Despite some command challenges, Cozart dominated the Huskies, striking out six batters and allowing only a solo home run in the fourth inning. His 6'6, 260-pound frame and impressive pitch count of 73 through five innings showcased his potential.
As the game progressed, sophomore right-hander Jason Flores took over from Cozart. However, Flores faced some adversity, with batters taking advantage of his elevated pitches, resulting in a double down the right-field line. The Texas defense, particularly junior first baseman Casey Borba, had their work cut out for them.
In the seventh inning, Flores found his groove, shutting down Houston Christian in style. But it was the Longhorns' offense that truly shined. They opened the game with an RBI groundout in the first inning and added another run in the second thanks to an RBI single by junior catcher Andrew Ermis. The real fireworks came in the fourth inning, where Texas exploded for six runs, including a sacrifice fly and four consecutive singles. By the end of the inning, the Horns had accumulated eight hits, showcasing their offensive prowess.

The Longhorns' hitting parade continued in the fifth inning. Junior second baseman Ethan Mendoza started things off with an RBI single, followed by a three-run homer from junior catcher Carson Tinney, who sent the ball soaring into the visitor's bullpen in left field. Tinney's power display, though modest by his standards at 355 feet, added some much-needed momentum.
As Houston Christian threatened to prolong the game with two runs in the sixth, Texas responded with a strong bottom of the order. After walks drawn by Borba and sophomore right fielder Jonah Williams, Mendoza delivered a crucial single, driving in another run. Tinney then worked a nine-pitch walk to load the bases, setting the stage for a two-run single by junior center fielder Aiden Robbins. Redshirt senior Temo Becerra added to the Longhorns' tally with an error-induced run, bringing the final score to 16-3.
Texas finished the game with an impressive 14 hits from nine different players, including four multi-hit performances led by Mendoza. Tinney and Borba also contributed with three runs each.
