Conquering the San Juans: A Hiker's Journey to Salida (2026)

A High-Altitude Adventure: Trekking Through the San Juans and Beyond

In the world of hiking, few experiences can match the thrill of conquering high-altitude trails. And that's precisely what I've been up to, folks! I've just completed a remarkable journey through the San Juan Mountains in Colorado, covering an impressive 988.1 miles, and I'm here to share my tale.

Escaping the San Juans

The San Juans, with their rugged beauty, presented a unique challenge. Hitchhiking out of Pagosa Springs was surprisingly effortless, and the trail's initial ascent was a breeze, thanks to the town's culinary delights and caffeine boost. But the real test lay ahead—a relentless climb of over 5,000 feet daily. It was exhausting, but the breathtaking views made every step worthwhile.

The Knife's Edge: A Precarious Traverse

One of the most memorable moments was our encounter with the infamous Knife's Edge. This half-mile stretch, with its precipitous drop, demanded caution. We stuck together, and our friend Journey led the way, kicking steps in the snow. A scary moment occurred when Joker slipped, but his quick self-arrest skills saved the day. It's a reminder that hiking in such conditions requires skill and teamwork.

Battling Altitude and Unexpected Challenges

As we climbed higher, altitude-related issues became more apparent. I struggled with weakness and gastrointestinal problems, which I suspect were due to the thin air. It's a humbling experience when your body reminds you of its limits. But the beauty of the San Juans kept me going, and the camaraderie among hikers was invaluable.

Wildlife Encounters and Trail Magic

The San Juans also offered a chance to spot wildlife, like my first moose sighting in the marshlands. It's a unique experience to see these creatures in their natural habitat. And let's not forget the trail magic! I was fortunate to meet Steph, a trail angel from Wisconsin, who provided much-needed support and a friendly face.

Conquering a 14er and the Journey to Salida

One of the highlights was my first 14er, San Luis Peak. Waking up at 3:00 AM to catch the sunrise from the summit was a magical experience. The descent was equally rewarding, with the trail winding through aspen and spruce trees. The well-maintained path made the journey more enjoyable, and the trail magic from Scott, Carine, and Ace was a delightful surprise.

A Homey Haven in Salida

After a long day's hike, I arrived at the Butterfly House in Salida, a cozy hostel reminiscent of those on the Appalachian Trail. It's the perfect place to recharge, with a hot tub and a welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend it to fellow hikers seeking a home away from home.

Looking Ahead: The Collegiate West

As I write this, I'm gearing up for my next adventure—the Collegiate West. This section boasts the highest concentration of 14ers, promising breathtaking views and challenging hikes. I can't wait to tackle these peaks and share my experiences with you all.

In my opinion, hiking through the San Juans and beyond has been a testament to the beauty of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. It's a journey that challenges and inspires, leaving an indelible mark on every adventurer who dares to explore it. Until next time, keep exploring and pushing your limits!
