BTC's Bottom and Turnaround: Understanding Market Signals and the Role of Sound Money (2026)

With MSTR concerns assuaged, it's time to focus on traditional BTC signals. By Martin Gaspar, senior crypto market strategist at FalconX.

The Bitcoin (BTC) market has experienced a rollercoaster ride in recent years, with various factors influencing its price movements. In 2018, the market overheated, leading to a correction as valuations outpaced development. Fast forward to 2022, and leveraged blow-ups at Celsius and FTX caused a wave of forced selling. The recent market overhang was caused by MicroStrategy (MSTR), whose capital structure raised concerns about potential BTC sales to meet dividend obligations. However, MSTR has taken concrete steps to address these concerns, buying time for BTC to recover.

The BTC story remains a compelling narrative. As the money supply expands, surpassing $23 trillion in May, Bitcoin's role as sound money becomes increasingly relevant. Unlike gold, BTC is designed for ease of division and portability, with a fixed supply of 21 million coins. This unique feature adds value to BTC, making it an attractive asset for allocators.

Now, investors can shift their focus to traditional market signals around BTC. One key indicator is the BTC ETFs, which experienced significant outflows of $5.4 billion year-to-date through June 30. However, this was partly due to MSTR concerns and the SpaceX IPO. As these factors subside, sustained ETF inflows will signal market confidence stabilization. Additionally, BTC's Coinbase premium has improved, suggesting investor appetite is returning.

Another crucial signal is the exhaustion of sellers and the accumulation by believers. Historically, BTC has found a floor when sellers are depleted and long-term holders with conviction start accumulating. Currently, around 45% of long-term holder supply is in the red, indicating that many sellers have already exited the market. This leaves only committed holders who can withstand volatility and may even be adding to their positions. Data shows a record-high BTC supply held by long-term holders in recent weeks, while on-chain movements of longer-held BTC have slowed down.

The market is currently facing a downtrend since October, battling headwinds unrelated to BTC's fundamental attributes. The question is, what happens when these headwinds transform into tailwinds? With the money supply growth accelerating, sentiment and momentum could soon turn around. The market is poised for a potential turnaround, and investors should keep a close eye on traditional signals to make informed decisions.

In other news, MSTR has become an active capital manager, authorizing $1.25 billion in bitcoin sales and lifting its STRC dividend to 12%. Meanwhile, Circle and Tether face competition from a giant stablecoin-focused initiative, and U.S. President Donald Trump's crypto earnings have sparked conflict-of-interest debates.
